How Should You Dress for an Interview with a Tech Firm?

Tech firms are often quite laid back, but you should still dress to impress for an interview. How do you nail the smart casual look?

The tech industry is known for being quite laid-back. You only have to look at Mark Zuckerberg in his hoodie or Steve Jobs in his trademark black turtleneck and jeans. That doesn't mean all standards of formal dress should go out the window when you go for an interview. It's ok to dress down once the job's in the bag, but first impressions still count.

You want to hit that middle-of-the-road sweet spot – the smart casual look. Of course, it very much depends on the kind of tech company you're being interviewed by, and you'll probably have already gauged which are more laid back than others.

For women, a pair of ankle-length trousers is often a good look, matched with a well-tailored blazer and a fairly plain t-shirt or top. It's best to keep colours relatively neutral, but adding a little pop of brighter colour hints at a more casual, fun side. Just to add a slightly more formal touch, pumps or low heels are a better bet than trainers, but really it's down to what you feel comfy in.

For guys, chinos or a smart pair of jeans are acceptable, paired with a crisp white t-shirt and a simple blazer. Try not to go for any tops which feature loud graphics or slogans, because they're a distraction and could potentially be taken the wrong way if they're a bit on the wild side.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, because you won't perform at your best if you aren't. Relax about the wardrobe - ultimately they're judging on your performance, rather than your outfit.
