Why Gender Doesn't Decide the Capabilities of a Great Leader

Assuming someone will be able to be a good leader based on their gender can put a lot of people in positions they're not really suited for. When it comes to being a great leader it's wise to take a step back and reevaluate why you choose to base their capabilities on their gender.

Leadership knows no gender. It's either you're a great leader or you're not. Now, there are definitely different styles of leading, but that does not mean that one is more capable than the other. Even among male leaders, their leadership style is different.

Studies have shown that there are no significant differences in the capability to lead between a man and a woman - yet this misconception is still, sadly, prevalent. Capable leaders are humble, honest, committed, great decision makers, critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovative and inspirational. Both men and women are capable of possessing these qualities. It's not exclusive to either gender.

Of course, men and women have their own sets of strengths and weaknesses. But this again doesn't tip the scale in determining which gender leads better. It comes down to acknowledging them and improving where improvements need to be made.

So, before throwing around a bias assumption, take the time to actually understand that when it comes to leadership both men and women can be great.
