Keeping Your Distance: Office Etiquette in the New Normal

Office etiquette was already complicated enough; now with new social distance requirements, there's a whole new set of rules to learn! What are the dos and don'ts?

It may seem strange to stay 1-2 metres apart from your colleagues when you're used to sitting closer, brushing past one another in the hall and sharing snacks or office supplies. However, it's important to follow the new norms and be respectful. Keep to your own space and don't walk too close to your colleagues' desks as it may make them uncomfortable. If the elevator has the maximum number of people for safe distancing, wait for the next one.

Another challenge is that perhaps only part of your team has come back to the office. There will be video conferences where a few of you are in the office and a few are still working remotely. Remember that your remote colleagues might miss certain gestures or inflections in tone from those of you in the office. In these mixed meetings, try to talk to everyone as if you're in a video call with them, so your remote colleagues stay in the loop.

And as always, when back in the office remember to observe the proper hygiene that's recommended during the pandemic. Wash your hands frequently, wear a mask and change the mask on a daily basis. It's also more important than ever to keep your work area clean. Avoid sharing food and don't eat too close to other people.

If you're someone who's very careful about following the new norms, it can be off-putting to see those who are more lax about it. Be tactful when you correct them. They may have simply forgotten or may be unaware that what they're doing is unacceptable. Politely let them know that you're not comfortable with that behaviour. With mutual respect, it will be easier for everyone to adapt to the new etiquette.
